Teaching Kids The Value Of Giving

Our world is fast becoming a materialistic world. Capitalists take advantage of retail therapy to make lots of profits. These businesses build a need for people to acquire more stuff so they end up buying things they don’t actually need but actually looked pretty cool in the mall. And kids grow up in this capitalist culture full of me, me and me. We all become too engrossed with our needs that we forget to think of others.

As adults, we need to teach the importance of giving and sharing our blessings with the less fortunate. A child that knows how to give understands that not everyone enjoys the same lifestyle as them and that others have to struggle to earn money for basic needs like food, clothing and shelter, something that others take for granted. When kids know how to share, they realize that they have the power of uplifting the lives of others and making a difference in this world.

Many parents want their children to grow up to be philanthropic.

The hard part is knowing when—and how—to start instilling a sense of philanthropy in them.

Experts in the world of philanthropy offer several approaches.

But there is a consensus that it’s important to start talking to children about philanthropy early in their lives and continue to have those discussions as they grow.

(Via: http://www.marketwatch.com/story/how-to-teach-your-children-to-be-philanthropists-2017-03-27)

Kids are great imitators. So the act of giving or having a generous nature will probably become second nature to them if they see their elders doing the same in their everyday lives.

CHARITY and the spirit of giving have been elevated to a new level following the recent Asian tsunami. After witnessing the horrific images of pain and suffering streaming steadily across their TV sets, more people than ever before have dipped deeper into their own pockets to offer needed relief to the survivors of this unprecedented tragedy.

Many parents are using the destruction delivered by the disaster as an opportunity to help children learn about charity and the importance of reaching out to others in their time of need. They have made generous family donations, often involving their children in picking out the charity, writing the check, and preparing and mailing the envelope. They have allowed their children to witness turning the pain and grief of unimaginable loss into a time of extending love and compassion to unknown people half way around the world.

Clearly the recent tsunami provides an opportune time to teach children about charity. But what if parents want lessons about charity to be more than a one time occurrence? What if they want the spirit of giving to be a way of life for their children? What if they want charity to become a habit?

(Via: http://www.thesundaily.my/news/2200256)

Children learn to be generous and charitable from home. Practice the following habits at home and you no longer have to worry about teaching your kids about giving because they will have the initiative to do so on their own.

Giving to charity makes us happier

Researchers from the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and Harvard University found a positive relationship between charitable giving and happiness. The research has shown that how people spend their money impacts their happiness. In particular, people who spend money on others reported greater levels of happiness – actually activates the reward centre in your brain, can improve your overall life satisfaction, and reduces stress.

There are financial benefits too

Any time you make a charitable donation, keep your receipts! The cost of your donation is greatly reduced by claiming tax credits on your income tax return. It's important to determine which organizations can issue official donation receipts and what types of gifts qualify. Once you know that information, you can decide the total amount of donations you want to claim.

To help your kid(s) understand charity and get them into the habit of giving, consider some of these strategies below:

  • Help the elderly.

  • Donate clothes.

  • Provide nutritious food.

  • Help some animals.

  • Volunteer.

  • Make it a family thing.

(Via: http://www.thespec.com/community-story/6999066-wealth-matters-teaching-children-about-charitable-giving/)

The world is a better place if everyone learns how to give and share their blessings. There will be no such thing as social injustice because biases will likewise disappear, so is greed and abuse. And conflicts can be prevented when people tolerate one another and look after their well-being. When kids grew up in this harmonious environment, they will grow up to be responsible and compassionate adults who may be able to give a shot at world peace and living in harmony with all where wars are unheard of.

U.S. Tourism Hurting Over Trump’s Travel Bans

We all aspire to travel the world. Although it remains to be a dream for many, there are some individuals who really defy all the odds and go after their wanderlust. Many people can’t wait to travel to tropical dream destinations with its to-die-for beaches. However, if you don’t want to go far or break the bank, you can travel interstate because the U.S. is full of amazing natural or manmade attractions that can likewise satisfy your urge to travel.

While many visitors are locals, a big number are still foreign tourists who are dying to see all the amazing places in America that have often been featured in the movies or popular TV shows. But U.S. tourism is now suffering a major slump as the string of travel bans has limited the number of tourists who can freely come in and out of the country for leisure. People are often choosing Canada, and cities like Montreal, which have their own amazing amenities. As a result, the U.S. tourism is hurting and the industries relying on tourists in making money are also suffering. His intentions may be good but it seems that they forgot to look into all possible consequences of this move and how it will affect the U.S. economy in general.

President Trump says he wants to keep out people who threaten the security of the United States. But his policies are discouraging tourists and threatening the American travel business, experts say.

One study forecasts a 10.6 million decline in visitors this year and next. The drop -- nearly 7% of expected travelers -- will cost the U.S. economy more than $18 billion and about 107,000 jobs, according to Tourism Economics, a forecasting firm used by the industry.

More than half of the lost business will be caused by reduced travel from Canada and Mexico. But experts say they are concerned about tourism declines from the U.K. and western Europe as well.

In March, Trump announced a 90-day freeze on visas for citizens of Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Courts have blocked the visa restrictions. The Trump administration also banned travelers from 10 airports in Muslim majority countries from bringing laptops into the plane cabin.

The two policy changes, while controversial, were limited in scope. But the debate they have caused is discouraging travel far beyond the policies themselves.

"The travel ban, such as it is, would affect less than 0.1% of all visitors. But the whole rhetoric around it has damaged the U.S. brand as a destination," said Adam Sacks, president of Tourism Economics. "It's a very discretionary market. It takes very little for them to shift their travel plan and preferences."

(Via: http://money.cnn.com/2017/04/17/news/economy/trump-travel-tourism/)

While these travel bans only applies to citizens of certain high-risk countries, its message to the world at large was far from friendly. Hence, tourists who like traveling the world intentionally avoid the U.S. now and go to other places instead to have fun.

The rhetoric around president Trump’s US travel ban has damaged the US brand, experts say.

A study has forecast that president Trump’s travel ban could spark a 10.6 million decline in visitors to the US between this year and next.

Tourism Economics predicts the drop, which it expects to be nearly 7% of expected travellers, could cost the US economy $18 billion and 107,000 jobs.

More than half of the anticipated drop would be caused by reduced travel from Mexico and Canada, but Tourism Economics’ experts say they are also concerned about declines from the UK and other countries in Western Europe.

(Via: http://www.travelweekly.co.uk/articles/277337/trump-travel-ban-forecast-to-cost-us-18bn)

The U.S. economy benefits a lot from foreign tourists, whether they like to admit it or not. And for a country like the U.S. which is a melting pot of different nationalities and cultures, it can have a big impact and discourage other nationalities as well for this blatant act of racism and discrimination. When you look at it, a big number of the U.S. workforce is made of professional and skilled foreign workers who help drive the economy up. However, this travel ban shouldn’t come as a surprise either knowing Donald Trump’s racist nature.

Nevertheless, the damage has been done and foreign tourists decided to ban travel to the U.S. themselves rather than support a country that is not friendly to foreigners at all. But considering this is just the beginning of Trump’s administration, we can only wait and see what is in store for the next four years and watch out what new alliances will be formed and broken in the process.

Europe: No Longer The Superpower It Once Was

Wherever you are in the world, people have high regards to the U.S. and Europe in all aspects, whether in the economy, politics, and opportunities. People, and some news sites fondly call these places as the land of greener pasture and it is true in a lot of ways. However, the economy of these countries has greatly suffered over the years but they still manage to emerge as first world countries and superpower in the field of global politics.

The U.S. often comes to mind when we think of a superpower and America has shown the world it really is throughout the years. Europe came in second but still a superpower in its own right, according to some political groups. However, the world is not blind to the fast growth of the Chinese economy with India not to be left behind. You’d be surprised at how much other countries rely on China on a lot of things. If you want, check the labels of whatever item you can find at home or in stores and they’re likely made in China. But with the Brexit and all, Europe suffered a big blow and caused the markets to be volatile for quite some time and it seems the EU has not yet recovered after all.

Many view Europe as a spent force in global politics. Conventional wisdom states that world politics today is unipolar, with the United States as the sole superpower. Or perhaps it is multipolar, with China, India, and the rest rising to challenge Western powers. Either way, Europe’s role is secondary — and declining. The European Union, it is said, is too weak to avoid withering away in the face of Russian subversion, mass migration, right-wing revolt, British plans to leave, slow growth, and anemic defense spending.

Foreign Policy makes the case that Europe rivals or surpasses the United States and China in its ability to project a full spectrum of global military, economic, and soft power. Europe consistently deploys military troops within and beyond its immediate neighborhood. It manipulates economic power with a skill and success unmatched by any other country or region. And its ability to employ “soft power” to persuade other countries to change their behavior is unique.

If a superpower is a political entity that can consistently project military, economic, and soft power transcontinentally with a reasonable chance of success, Europe surely qualifies. Its power, moreover, is likely to remain entrenched for at least another generation.

(Via: http://www.nextbigfuture.com/2017/04/the-case-that-europe-is-a-superpower.html)

For instance, the issue of Brexit really shook up the entire Europe and even the entire world. Who would’ve thought the U.K. would really separate from the EU, but then they have their reasons. But just how did really Brexit affected the European Union in particular?

Brexit is a problem not only for Britain but for the EU as well. The British economy is as big as that of the 20 smallest member states put together. So it is as if 20 of 28 countries were leaving the bloc at the same time.
Brexit destroys the European equilibrium, rendering otiose minority rights in the European Council: the
Lisbon treaty specifies that a blocking minority needs 35 per cent of the EU population. Together with the UK, the so-called “Deutschmark bloc” (Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Finland) has a population of exactly 35 per cent. These are all countries in favour of free trade. At the same time, the countries surrounding the Mediterranean, which have traditionally been more reliant on protectionism and state intervention, have a population of 36 per cent, which is also a blocking minority. The Lisbon balance has been destroyed because the first block shrinks after Brexit to a population share of 25 per cent, while the Mediterranean countries extend theirs to 42 per cent. They may now seek to turn Europe into a trade fortress.

(Via: https://www.ft.com/content/e0051162-1ee0-11e7-b7d3-163f5a7f229c)

Indeed, it is a big problem for all of Europe. The leaving of the U.K. is a big loss to this global superpower and it seems that things are still quite shaky until now. But knowing how President Trump is, he found satisfaction in the misery of others.

Within weeks of his inauguration, President Donald Trump had already wrought a strategic revolution in U.S. foreign policy. Russia, formerly an antagonist, has been promoted to preferred partner. In its place, Team Trump has identified a new enemy. With this enemy there can be no coexistence, no cooperation. It must be humbled and divided, not merely defeated but utterly overthrown. This enemy is the European Union.

They say nothing is permanent in politics, no lasting enemies or allies. And as such, the U.S. allies have changed as well along with the changing of the administration. Who would’ve thought that the previous administration’s enemy, Russia, is now a friend of the United States?

Trump has more than once described nato as “obsolete.” During his campaign, he expressed uncertainty about whether, as president, he would honor America’s nato obligations to small countries threatened by Russia. He cheered Britain’s exit from the European Union. Trump and his chief strategist, Steve Bannon, have made common cause with populist nationalists working to end the European Union outright. Trump reportedly received Nigel Farage, the former leader of the UK Independence Party, at the White House; when he ran Breitbart.com, Bannon promoted the Dutch politician Geert Wilders and France’s Marine Le Pen. Hungary’s authoritarian prime minister, Viktor Orbán, claims to have been granted a call with President-elect Trump in November (two months before the president of France spoke to Trump).

Meanwhile, Trump has offered sharp personal comments on Chancellor Angela Merkel. One of his top advisers has called for Germany to flout the EU and negotiate bilaterally with the U.S. so as to reduce German trade surpluses. In a meeting with Merkel, Trump also called for direct negotiations, and suggested that Germany had outmaneuvered the U.S. On bad days, the U.S.–German relationship looks more strained than at any time since the end of the Cold War, including during the Iraq War. The Trump administration seems determined only to widen the breach.

(Via: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/05/the-plan-to-end-europe/521445/)

It is true perhaps that nothing is permanent in this world except for death and taxes. Even a powerful supernation like Europe also suffers from considerable losses right now and it has significantly affected its image as a superpower in itself. Although they are still a powerful force to contend with, they are just but a shadow of its former self. Only time can tell how this great nation will recover from such a considerable loss and how they would be (especially their economy) able to bounce back and regain their rightful place in the world.

Does Your Psyche Suffer At Work?

Modern work can be stressful for many. In any workplace, competition is tough because many are looking for jobs but only a few get hired. So, workers need to be always on their toes if they want to keep their job or risk getting sacked several months later. Moreover, the use of various technologies can also be challenging for any new worker as they have to learn so many things at once to be able to function as expected at work, which is not always an easy thing to do.

Co-workers may be silently waiting for you to make a mistake to make you look bad in front of the boss. All these things make work life even more taxing. Work metrics are even more ridiculous than ever. How can average Joe fit in and do his/ her job properly through it all? But the most important question is: “Is you work causing your psyche undue stress and make you more susceptible to depression?”

Psychological disorders, which include depression, severe anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many others, are a worldwide issue that cut across every sector of society. Anyone can be affected by these disorders, regardless of sex, age, race, or gender. They cause an individual to react in a manner adverse to others, and ultimately ensure that said individual would find it burdensome to maintain a normal relationship with society.

The problem of mental health presents a particular conundrum under labor relations and standards. Employers and employees alike walk a very thin line between recognizing that psychological disorders are a real problem and therefore must be treated accordingly, and safeguarding against abuse and misreading of symptoms. It does not help that, unlike physical disabilities which can be verified easily through a mere eye test, psychological disorders by their very nature vary greatly from person to person, in terms of the originating cause, the degree, the time period, or even the actual existence thereof. As a result, a valid diagnosis can be very difficult, if not impossible.

(Via: http://www.bworldonline.com/content.php?id=142589)

Many will often shrug off work-related stress because most people go through it every day. As competition increases, demand at work likewise does. Unfortunately, no one tells students about this. At times it can negatively affect the employee and even put a strain in their personal lives. And it is not surprising to find employees who suffer from chronic anxiety and depression because the workplace proved too much for their failing mental and physical health.

A culture of long working hours at some companies can cause workers to collapse from a build-up of stress, experts warn.

Hours spent sitting at desks could affect people’s physical and psychological health, they said.

"The typical workplace scenario demands that people are sitting at their desks, often in front of computers, for very long stretches of time," said Dr Deema Sihweil, a clinical psychologist at the Carbone Clinic.

"Tight deadlines, job insecurity or social-political issues at the workplace also contribute to stress build up.

"Long working hours without enough break time to attend to other life matters, strict office policies and workplace inflexibility are known to have a significant negative impact on physical and psychological health."

Even low levels of stress can manifest themselves in various ways without regular preventive measures such as exercise, adequate sleep and a good support network, according to Dr Sihweil.

"Headaches, digestive problems, joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome and most especially muscle tension around the body are common manifestations of stress, not to mention the cognitive distress we experience," she said.

"Not only does being physically idle at the desk cause stress to the body, but psychological stress from work issues or family issues can lead to pain all over."

(Via: http://www.thenational.ae/uae/health/long-working-hours-and-stress-are-leading-to-health-problems-doctors-warn)

We not only work to earn a living but to realize our life’s potential as well. However, it would be hard, if not impossible, to do so if we are constantly dreading the thought of work. Our most productive years are during our working years but it also proves to be the most stressful too. While not all companies give importance to the mental health of their employees, including abuse, it is usually your personal responsibility to look after yourself.

If you are not happy with your work, then it is probably a sign that it is time to go looking for a new job. If you love your work but it is just the environment and the workload that bothers you, then research and try some stress-busting practices to help you cope with various work stressors. No matter how difficult life at work may be, you still have a choice to leave or rise above the situation.

Can The Windows 10 Spy On You?

Most Windows users have probably already made the upgrade to a Windows 10 OS right now since Microsoft has been relentless in promoting for its upgrade for quite some time. If you’re a fan of the Windows 7 and has stuck with it through the years and didn’t really like Windows 8, then the Windows 10 is good news for you because it’s highly similar to Windows 7 but better. While upgrading to a new operating system brings with it the discomfort of dealing with flaws that Microsoft hasn’t been able to polish just yet, being able to upgrade to it for free is something you’d likely be thankful for much later.

Even if you came from a Windows 7 PC, the transition won’t be that difficult and navigating its new interface will be a walk in the park for many. It is user-friendly and starts up is faster too. And most of all is that is has better security features with the Secure Boot from Windows 8, among others.  Ah, the perks of modern and upgraded technology. But wait, there’s more.

Of course, Microsoft – like Apple and Google – would like everyone to use the latest version of its operating system. It has therefore encouraged early adoption by offering a free upgrade to Windows 10 – again, like Apple and Google, except that Microsoft’s upgrade offer is only available for a year.

Either way, once you have installed Windows 10, it will be updated free for the life of your device. There will (probably) never be a Windows 11, because Microsoft is now producing two small updates each year instead of one big update every three years.

Whether it’s worth upgrading now depends on what sort of PC you have, but the more mobile, the better. If you have an old desktop PC with no touchscreen, no camera and no microphone, there are fewer benefits. (The touchscreen isn’t essential, it’s just nice to have.) If you have a modern Windows laptop or 2-in-1 with UEFI firmware, the upgrade is more attractive.

I say “the more mobile, the better” because Windows 10 is a mobile operating system. I know this upsets people who think their PCs should work just like they did in a previous century, but the whole technology world is changing and Windows is changing along with it. Microsoft’s boss Satya Nadella keeps repeating his “cloud first, mobile first” mantra, and Windows will continue to become increasingly mobile and cloud-aware.

(Via: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/askjack/2016/mar/31/why-should-i-upgrade-from-microsoft-windows-7-to-10)

Truly, technology is a wonderful thing. It enables us to do things we never thought were possible in the past. However, like any good thing, it has its drawbacks too. The more the advanced the technology, the more difficult it is for the human mind to comprehend all processes involved in its operation. And now, issues of spying using the Windows 10 OS have been circulating. So, I guess there goes our privacy down the drain.

Windows 10 is amazing. Windows 10 is fantastic. Windows 10 is glorious. Windows 10 is faster, smoother and more user-friendly than any Windows operating system that has come before it. Windows 10 is everything Windows 8 should have been, addressing nearly all of the major problems users had with Microsoft’s previous-generation platform in one fell swoop.

But there’s something you should know: As you read this article from your newly upgraded PC, Windows 10 is also spying on nearly everything you do.

And the funny thing is that we’ve been warned all along yet most of us remain clueless about it. Remember clicking “I agree” to the company’s privacy statement. It’s all there all along but we just didn’t have the time to go over the terms and just clicked on to proceed to get it over with.

Well, here is Microsoft’s 12,000-word service agreement. Some of it is probably in English. We’re pretty sure it says you can’t steal Windows or use Windows to send spam, and also that Microsoft retains the right to take possession of your first-born child if it so chooses. And that’s only one of several documents you’ll have to read through.

Actually, here’s one excerpt from Microsoft’s privacy statement that everyone can understand:

“Finally, we will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to: 1.comply with applicable law or respond to valid legal process, including from law enforcement or other government agencies; 2.protect our customers, for example to prevent spam or attempts to defraud users of the services, or to help prevent the loss of life or serious injury of anyone; 3.operate and maintain the security of our services, including to prevent or stop an attack on our computer systems or networks; or 4.protect the rights or property of Microsoft, including enforcing the terms governing the use of the services – however, if we receive information indicating that someone is using our services to traffic in stolen intellectual or physical property of Microsoft, we will not inspect a customer’s private content ourselves, but we may refer the matter to law enforcement.”

If that sentence sent shivers down your spine, don’t worry. As invasive as it is, Microsoft does allow Windows 10 users to opt out of all of the features that might be considered invasions of privacy. Of course, users are opted in by default, which is more than a little disconcerting, but let’s focus on the solution.

(Via: https://bgr.com/2015/07/31/windows-10-upgrade-spying-how-to-opt-out/)

We’ll never really know if our gadgets are working for us or against us, like in this case. However, being cautious in all your computer activity whether online or offline helps a lot to maintain your privacy and prevent third parties from gaining access to your personal data. You have a say whether you want to proceed with the upgrade or not but like any other technology, it is better to stay updated and abreast with the latest advancements.

Although we can’t really stop these tech giants from proceeding with various upgrades to improve their products and service, you’ll likely be able to stumble upon an opt-out option on certain clauses that bothers you if you look hard enough. The web is also a great resource as you can research just about anything on the Internet now. Make use of it so you never have to settle for anything less.

Federal Grant Cuts And More Persist In San Diego

America is known as the land of the free and the home of the brave. But over the years, the failing economy and high unemployment rate drove people into homelessness and even more social problems. A big number of the population now relies on federal grants to subsist on their day-to-day as opportunities in finding work or other opportunities to earn an income so they can support themselves and their families continue to elude them.

The government provides basic services to its people especially to the ones who can’t afford to pay for it themselves. But when President Trump assumed office, he made it known to everyone about the various budget cuts that will take place on services he does not consider as important to nation building and in fulfilling his promise of making American great again.

In Vista, a slice of federal grant money helps run a shelter for homeless families. In Escondido, similar funds help feed shut-in seniors. In Oceanside, some of the cash goes toward after-school programs for children vulnerable to sliding into delinquency or dropping out of school.

The federal money — called Community Development Block Grants — is channeled through cities, often to bolster local programs that serve moderate- to low-income residents.

Several nonprofits that receive the funds now worry the grants will be eliminated under President Donald Trump’s proposed budget, which calls for significant spending increases for the military and immigration enforcement, and deep cuts elsewhere — including the block grants, which provide $3 billion annually to community programs across the country.

White House Budget Director Mick Mulvaney said recently that many of the programs that receive the funding aren’t effective, and that a better way to show compassion would be to save taxpayer money.

(Via: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/communities/north-county/sd-no-cdbg-funds-20170416-story.html)

While many appreciate the efforts of the Trump administration to wipe out illegal immigrants in the country and strengthen our military force to better fight off terrorists, it is unfortunate that he has to give up the delivery of these basic services that are a big help to the poor and the marginalized Americans in realizing his vision of a building a greater and more powerful America.

In another ruling allowing pension cuts, an appeals court last week overturned a state labor board ruling that a voter-approved San Diego pension reform was invalid because the city declined to bargain the issue with labor unions.

The initiative approved by 66 percent of San Diego voters in 2012 gave all new city hires, except police, a 401(k)-style individual investment retirement plan instead of a pension and imposed a five-year freeze on pay used to calculate pensions.

The state Public Employment Relations Board, whose post-election decision was overturned by a unanimous ruling of a three-member appellate panel, took the unprecedented step of trying to get a court to remove the San Diego initiative from the ballot before the vote.

(Via: http://capitolweekly.net/appeals-court-allows-pension-cuts-backs-san-diego/)

This is another major blow to the elderly population of San Diego who relies heavily on their pensions to get on with their day-to-day without totally relying on federal grants that are being cut down as well.

Regional leaders touted several new programs to address San Diego’s homelessness crisis during an unprecedented city forum on Monday, but also stressed they face significant challenges that could make progress frustratingly slow.

The new programs, some recently underway and others still in the works, include additional shelter beds, more subsidized apartments and launching efforts to prevent homelessness with counseling and other services for those at risk.

The leaders also discussed new approaches to managing the homeless, including a comprehensive evaluation of which programs are working, a hotline for available beds, a regional plan for addressing homelessness and a countywide computer system to track all people seeking services.

The challenges include San Diego’s high cost of housing, its low vacancy rate, a sharp decrease in single-room-occupancy hotels and the region’s relative lack of federal and local funding compared to other cities with homeless problems.

(Via: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/politics/sd-me-homeless-hearing-20170320-story.html)

The same thing is also happening in other parts of the country, not just in San Diego alone. These government initiatives can be a major blow to many Americans who still have a hard time coping with unemployment and homelessness but now also face threats of more budget cuts about to hit them hard and affect their daily living. The government sees these initiatives as a means to achieve their goals of revitalizing the U.S. economy regardless if many people suffer along the way. Let us all wait and see what will happen in the next few years of the Trump leadership to find out whether these budget cuts did serve their purpose well.
